The Boy with the Best Idea
A long, long ago
a man with an elephant came to a village. This was the first time the people of
the village had seen an elephant, and they wanted to know the weight of the
elephant. But everybody had different ideas about it. Each of them said that he
was right and the others were wrong. They tried to think of a plan to find out
how much the elephant weighed. But they could not think of one. Then a boy
said, “I have a plan and I can tell you how much the elephant weighs; please
let me try it.”The people of the village did not want to listen to the boy.
“How can he find a plan when we, old people, cannot?” they said. But they
decided to let him try. The boy first told them to put the elephant in a big
boat. The boy then made a mark on the side of the boat where the water reached.
Then he told them to take the elephant out of the boat, and the boat rose in
water.
After that, he
collected some large stones and told the people to put them in the boat. The
boat began to go down again till at last the water came up to the mark on the
side. This showed that the stones in the boat were the same weight as the
elephant. It was then very easy to weigh the stones. So the people knew how
much the elephant weighed.

Religious
Festivals Around the World
Glossary

Islamic Festivals-Ramadan
Because the Islamic religion uses a calendar based on the moon, not the
sun, the exact date of religious festivals changes from year to year. The
Islamic calendar begins with the hijra, the year when Mohammed left the city of
Mecca for Medina.
The New Year is a time for peaceful prayer for most Muslim people. Every
year, in the month of Ramadan – the ninth month of the Islamic calendar – all
Muslims fast from early morning until evening.
By living without everyday comfort, even for a short time, a fasting
person better understands the life of poor people who are hungry, and also
grows in his or her spiritual life.
Easter in Poland
In Poland, there are many customs at Easter: for example, the “blessing
basket”, containing (among other things) coloured eggs, bread, salt and white
sausages. Everything in the basket has a meaning: the eggs represent Christ,
the bread, salt and sausages good health and enough money in the coming year.
The family Easter breakfast on Sunday morning is very important as Christmas
dinner for Poles. And there is one more Polish tradition connected with Easter
Monday: “watering”. People throw water at each other, and this is a wish for
good health, too. Even strangers on the street are not safe from a bath of cold
water on Easter Monday.
A Hindu Festival- Diwali
The festival of Diwali is one of the most essential (important)
religious festivals in India. It lasts for five days around the end of October.
It is the festival of Laxmi, the Goddess who, in the Hindu religion, brings
peace and prosperity.
Preparations for the festival begin several weeks before the festival
itself. People clean and decorate their homes, prepare special food and buy new
clothes and jewellery to welcome the Goddess into their homes. All over India,
people light up their homes with oil lamps and colourful lights.
The celebrations take place on the darkest night of the lunar month,
Amavasya. In the evening, fireworks fill the sky to make Diwali a true
“Festival of Light”.

Read the text “10
ways to improve your memory” and do the tasks:
I. Match the
headings (A-J) to the paragraphs (1-10) of the text (10 points):
A. Form a mental picture |
B. Listen to classical music |
C. Take mental exercise |
D. Invent a story
|
E. Take an interest – make an effort |
F. Keep to a healthy diet |
G. Drink coffee |
H. Take physical exercise |
I. Organise your ideas |
J. Repeating things |
A good memory is often seen
as something that comes naturally, and a bad memory as something that cannot be
changed, but actually there is a lot that you can do to improve your memory.
Here are the experts’ top tips.
1. ____ We all remember the things we are interested in and
forget the ones that bore us. This explains the reason why schoolboys remember
football results easily but struggle with dates from their history lessons!
Take an active interest in what you want to remember, and concentrate on it.
One way to “make” yourself more interested is to ask questions – the more the
better!
2. ____ Repeating things is the best way to remember things
for a short time, e.g. remembering a phone number for a few seconds. ‘Chunking’
or grouping numbers helps you to remember them, e.g. the following numbers
would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at
them in “chunks”, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.
3. ____ Another way to make something more memorable is to
think about something visual associated with it. Form a picture in your mind,
and the stranger the picture the better you will remember it! Is an English
person studying Spanish wanted to remember the Spanish word for “duck” –
“pato”, he/she could associate it with the English verb ‘to pat’ and imagine a
picture of someone patting a duck on the head.
4. ____ To remember long lists, try to make up a story which
includes all the items you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked
to remember up to 120 words using this technique and when they were tested
later, they could remember 90% of them!
5. ____ If we organise what we know in a logical way we
remember information more easily. Make well-organised notes. Be sure things are
clear in your mind.
6. ____ Many experts believe that listening to some
composers, especially to Mozart, helps people to organise their ideas more
clearly and so improves their memory. Sadly, rock music does not have the same
effect!
7. ____ If you don’t want to lose your memory as you get
older you need to keep your brain fit, just like your body. Logic puzzles,
crosswords and mental arithmetic are all good “mental aerobics”.
8. ____ Physical activity is also important for your memory,
because it increases your heart rate and sends more oxygen to your brain, and
that makes your memory work better. Exercising also reduces stress, which is
very bad for the memory.
9. ____ The old saying says that “eating fish makes you
brainy”. Scientists have discovered that the fats found in fish like tuna,
sardines and salmon – as well as in olive oil – help to improve the memory.
Vitamins C and A (found in fruits like oranges, strawberries and red grapes)
and vitamin B (found in lean meat and green vegetables) are good “brain food”,
too.
10.
____ Caffeine may not be too good
for you, but like exercise, it increases your heart rate and sends more oxygen
to your brain. A cup of this drink really helps you concentrate when you sit
down to study.
II. Give the synonyms from the text (3 points):

The
Great Famine
The year of 1845 changed
the history of Ireland forever. The weather was good so people were expecting a
good potato crop that year. What they didn’t know was that a new form of potato
disease had been brought into
Europe.
The disease first appeared
in America two years earlier, and then it arrived via cargo ships into France
and finally reached the Isle of Wight and Ireland. It turned potatoes into a
black, rotten mess, which nobody could eat. More than half of the year’s crop
was destroyed.
Irish people depended on
potatoes for their survival. Most
people owned very small areas of land, and they grew potatoes instead of grain
because a farmer could produce three times as much food on the same plot of
land. A single acre of potatoes produced enough food for a family for a year.
Each family grew only what they needed as they didn’t have anywhere to store
potatoes over the winter.
There was famine (голод) all over the
country. People went hungry without any food to eat for days. Then in 1846, the
potato crop was devastated once
again. The harvest in 1847 was also very poor. Three years without potatoes led
to enormous problems for Ireland.
The British government,
which ruled Ireland at the time, first did very little to help the people in
need. In fact, during the crisis, British landlords continued exporting food
from the country simply because they could get a better price abroad. Finally,
in 1847 the government decided to do something about Ireland. They set up soup
kitchens to give free food to people who needed it the most. They also started
work programmes to help people make money so they could buy food for their
families. But it was too little, too late.
Between 1845 and 1855,
more than 700,000 Irish people died. After the famine, an estimated 2 million
people left the country. Some people started new lives in Britain’s industrial
cities, for example Glasgow, London and Liverpool. Others went to the USA. The
population of Ireland dropped by more than a quarter.
The Great Famine, as they
called the hunger crisis, transformed
Irish culture and had a big effect on the Gaelic language. The crisis was worst
in the west of Ireland, where most Gaelic speakers lived. Families who decided
to emigrate no longer had any use
for Gaelic in their new countries, and future generations of Irish immigrants
didn’t learn the language at all. Today only a small minority of Irish people speak Gaelic as their
first language.
But many historians believe it was also the
Great Famine that led to the nationalist movements which finally brought about
Ireland’s independence from Britain in 1921.

All things for all people – everywhere
Many visitors to London know that Harrods is the largest department
store in the world, with over 92,000 square metres of selling space. But do
they also know some other interesting facts about the company that, according
to its motto, prides itself on selling ‘all things for all people –
everywhere’?
1._______Today’s much-loved trading giant started out very differently
when the company’s founder moved his grocery shop to its current location in
1849. Initially, it consisted only of a single room with three employees: two
shop assistants and a delivery boy. It took forty years to grow into a company
employing one hundred people by 1880.
2. ______An unexpected disaster made Harrods really famous in December
1883 when the store burned down in a fire. Amazingly, Harrods still delivered
all its Christmas orders on time, and made a fantastic profit.
3. ______It was Harrods at the end of the 19th century that installed
the world’s first escalator. Brave travellers on the moving staircase were
rewarded with a glass of brandy when they reached the top.
4. ______Harrods’ success in Britain did not extend to other countries.
In 1912, they opened their only department store in a foreign country in Buenos
Aires, Argentina, which became independent about thirty years later, but still
continued to use the name.
Finally, in 1997, a British court ordered the Argentinian shop to stop
trading under the Harrods brand.
5. ______Famous customers of Harrods include author A. A. Milne, who
bought the original Winnie-the-Pooh in the store, and film director Alfred
Hitchcock, who ordered his favourite fish there, which had to be flown to him
